Safety

Trekking with strangers, safely

Buddies puts trekkers in touch; it doesn’t organize trips. A few simple habits make all the difference.

Meet before you go

Meet the group in Kathmandu or Pokhara a day or two before setting off, in a public place. You’ll see whether you get along before spending ten days together.

Give your route to someone close

Give someone close the trek, the dates, the guide’s name and the group members’ names, and agree on when you’ll check in.

Go with a licensed guide

Foreigners need one on most treks since April 2023. Book them together and pay them directly.

Check your insurance

It must cover trekking, the planned altitude and helicopter evacuation.

Listen to the altitude

Climb slowly, plan acclimatization days. Nobody should keep climbing with altitude sickness symptoms, whatever the group’s schedule.

Women-only groups

An organizer can open her departure to women only: then only “woman” profiles can ask to join, and she approves each request.

Report anything wrong

Asking for money before the trek, inappropriate behaviour, fake profile: use the “Report” link on the page, profile or message. We read every report.
